Why you should do ISTQB Exams?
First visit this site: http://www.istqb.org/
We all should understand what we are really doing. At least we should understand what we are suppose to do. Like in all other professions we also have lot of stuffs to learn. I agree that the context of the job changes from project to project and may be you are working on a unique project. But it is always better to be reminded of the nature of the industry.
If you are reading for the foundation exam you might find tons of theories and lot of process related knowledge. Most of the things that you may have never done. But watch closely! forget the theoretical worlds. These theories are all over us. It is just that they do not appear as the same as they are described in the syllabus. Therefore go through the foundation while enjoying the learning. I agree that there are some sections which are very boring specially the role specific activities. You might have to bear with that section. Other than that take it very serious as it will make a solid foundation for you as a professional.
There are lot of white box techniques mentioned in the syllabus. I found them very boring as those were new to me. But now I realize it was boring because I have never done them before in my working life. If you do not understand what they are really talking, you will find it very boring. For an example, foundation emphasizes on a technique called decision trees. This is very simple and people might ask is this what you learn for a professional certification. Forget that, and see the importance of that. More often decision tree is our testing scope. And it is the best way to find the negative scenarios. Its a damn simple, it is just that we do not do it, With ISTQB you will realize the importance of them. So go for it!
I will post more and more posts around this. May be I will include some sample questions for the foundation exam.
